Best Local LLM Tools: Ollama, LM Studio, Jan, and llama.cpp
By TechAIOrbit · Published
Local LLM tools optimize for different users: application APIs, desktop discovery, open desktop workflows, or low-level inference control.
Last verified: 2026-09-14. Model support depends on hardware, quantization, and version.
Use-case matrix
| Tool | Choose it when | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Ollama | You want a simple local service and API | Less low-level control than llama.cpp |
| LM Studio | You want desktop discovery plus local APIs | Desktop terms differ from an MIT library |
| Jan | You want an open-source desktop app | Check current backend compatibility |
| llama.cpp | You need direct GGUF inference control | Most setup responsibility |
Hardware and security
A model that fits on disk may exceed RAM or VRAM after context cache and runtime overhead. “Local” also does not guarantee isolation: plugins, downloads, remote providers, telemetry settings, and exposed HTTP listeners can cross the machine boundary. Bind servers to loopback unless remote access is secured.
Compare provider limits in the LLM context-window guide, then read Ollama vs LM Studio for the direct local-runner decision.
